1900 Hotchkiss House

Santa Monica Removing an Obstruction Santa Monica, The Los Angeles Times, June 26, 1900 p. 115.

Santa Monica, June 25-[Regular Correspondence.] The moving of a house in the southern part of town was the occasion of an unusual display of formality this morning. The house is owned by Col. A.B. Hotchkiss, and for a long period has stood on Pacific street at the intersection of formed by Ocean avenue. Several months ago the City Trustees let a contract for grading the street. Col. Hotchkiss denied the right of the contractor to remove the building, and the dispute drifted into the courts. At a recent meeting of the Board of City Trustees an ordinance was passed declaring the building to be a nuisance. The Street Superintendent was instructed to remove it, and the City Marshal was directed to furnish the necessary police protection, so that the removal could be accomplished without interference. As far as heard from this afternoon, the policing of that district during the moving operation has not been accompanied by any casualties.
