Ned C. Howe [1930-2008]
October 2008
Ned C. Howe, age 78, of Grandville, died in Montana, struck by a passing truck. He was an anchor for his family and cherished his children and grandchildren. He passed on his love of sports to them and enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams, especially the Chicago White Sox. Ned had deep roots in Grandville, a city he loved and lived in his entire life. He was a devoted Grandville Bulldogs fan, an original Grandville Athletic Booster and over the years raised several bulldogs who became G.H.S. mascots, the most recent mascot and best buddy, Schultzy. Ned was an avid golfer and long time member at Sunnybrook Country Club. He really enjoyed golfing with his family and friends. When he was in the room there was a warmth of laughter with a friendly bit of sarcasm. His friends and family loved sharing jokes, precious moments, and peppermint schnapps with "Papa." Ned also enjoyed tending to his flowers and many people liked to drive by his house to enjoy his amazing gardens. He had a passion for driving the back roads of this country saying that too many interesting sights were missed traveling the freeways! Ned was also a very proud Marine. He was a generous and loyal friend, brother, uncle, father, and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Papa has left for the 19th hole with a bottle of Du Bouchett. His wife, Joan Howe, died of cancer. A Memorial Celebration was held 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Sunnybrook Country Club (624 Port Sheldon).
