Carla Barreett, a treasured mother, grandmother, and Santa Monica community member, passed away at age 70 in her Venice home on June 27 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. She is survived by two daughters, Kristen Barrett and Devon Guerra, her grandchildren, Diego and Maya Guerra, and sons-in-law, Juan “Nano” Guerra and Anthony Barrese.

Carla was born September 11, 1947 to Seymour (Bromo) Seltzer and Freda (Fritzi) Steinberg in Culver City, CA. She graduated from Hollywood High School in 1966, and in 1975 she married Patrick “Pat” Barrett, of Santa Monica.

Carla and Pat owned and operated Barrett’s Appliances in Santa Monica until 2014. Carla was active in community service, serving as a Santa Monica Kiwanis member for three decades.

Carla was devoted to helping children, volunteering as a Girl Scout troop leader and later as a classroom volunteer at McKinley elementary in Santa Monica. She twice served as President of the Santa Monica Breakfast Club, which rases money for children’s dental health.

She was knon to her friends as boundlessly optimistic; a woman who made instant friends with strangers in line at the store, played peek-a-boo with every small child she encountered, and stopped dog-owners on the street so she could meet their dogs. Carla enjoyed the sunsets in Los Angeles but her favorite place in the worls was the family vacation spot at Trinity Alps Resort, whee she loved to sit on the banks of the Stuart Fork River and read a book, surrounded by the joy of family and friends.
