Santa Monica Mayor and Council Member Ken Genser [1950-2010],* 2010, 2009, 2008, 2001, 2000, 1992, 1988, 1950
- Architect, Land Use Planning Consultant, Santa Monica Mayor, Santa Monica City Councilor, Urban Plannner,
- Grandfather was a contractor who built the Aero Theater for Donald Douglas, 2009
- Youth Boxing Lessons, 2010
- Attended Inglewood High, UC Berkeley and Sci Arc (Architecture), Santa Monica
- I think he was the last one of us "original" Santa Monica trouble makers serving on the Council. By that I mean those of us who worked on the
- Save the Pier efforts in the early 70s before SMRR.
- Stop the Santa Monica Mall efforts in the early 70s before SMRR.
- Ken was a shy young volunteer in the Ruth Y. Goldway assembly race in 1977
- And stalwart campaign worker in the first SMRR campaign in 1979. I haven't been engaged in Santa Monica politics since 1994 but I always felt that I was still there somehow because Ken was on the Council.
- City Task Force for Revision of the Housing Element, 2010, 1982, 1980
Chair of the Goals and Policies subcommittee from 1980 to 1982.
He was a founding member of Community Corporation of Santa Monica, serving from 1982 to 1988.
He served on the Planning Commission from 1983 to 1985.
Ken served as a board member of the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation from 1985 to 1988.
Mayor Ken Genser served on the Santa Monica City Council for 21 years, since 1988. He was elected Mayor three times by Council in 1992, 2000 and 2008. Ken was Mayor Pro Tempore in 1991 and 1999
He was known for his
- Fierce intellect,
- Passion for progressive social policy
- Compassion for people, 2010
He was an inspiration for political service and political stances, 2009
- Preserving the things we cherish about Santa Monica,
including affordable housing,
maintaining the scale and character of our residential community,
and compassion and inclusion for everyone in our city.
Ken's sense of humor and sharp intellect are among his greatest assets, 2009
On council his experience, meant he led on issues ranging from affordable housing and tenant protection, land use and zoning policies to environmental quality, workers rights, parks, public safety and funding for the schools, 2010
The honorable Ken Genser has shown a steadfast commitment to
- the living wage movement,
- city workers,
- and neighborhood groups in Santa Monica while
- giving tireless service on the City Council. Santa Monica and its residents are indeed fortunate that he has chosen this city to live, work and give 2009
- Ken surprised all of us by supporting the boxing program in the Virginia Park, pointing out that he had been trained to box as a boy and that it had contributed to his own self-confidence and helped him cope with his physical ailments, 2010,
- Ken's philosophy is that Santa Monica must strive to be a city of inclusion. When people get to know each other, traditional barriers fall and there is a greater potential for people of diverse backgrounds to form a sense of shared responsibilty. Through zoning, housing policy, urban design, cultural and recreational programs, and social services, cities can make it more or less likely for people to interact with their neighbors or a greater sense of community is a major driver of Ken's decisions as a council member.
The successes of the last twenty years include,
- 1) Affordable Housing, 2009
- 2) Support for youth and our public schools, 2009
- 3) Environmental Sustainability, 2009
Geraldine points out that Ken had become the Santa Monica City Council's reliable institutional memory and Judy argues that Ken's institutional contributions will last because they are structural changes in the city itself, 2010
As reported in the Santa Monica Mirror, XI, 32, 14 Jan. 2010 Mayor Ken Genser presided at the opening of the Annenberg Community Beach House 25, April 2009 and at the celebration of the 100 anniversary of the Santa Monica Pier, 9 September 2009, along with Santa Monica Police Chief Tim Jackman, Santa Monica City Councillors Richard Bloom, Kevin McKeown and Santa Monica Fire Chief Jim Hone, and Santa Monica City Manager Lamont Ewell, 2010
