The men were tried, convicted and sent to the penitentiary. Mr. Badillo is widely known and highly esteemed for his kindness of heart and strict integrity.
He has two sons, Louis and Pedro.
The family home is in Santa Monica Cañon.

from Wilmington, Delaware, was the father of the [San Pedro] harbor. He started the first stage-line to the pueblo; took a long chance and towed the first schooner into the inner harbor; promoted the first railroad between Los Angeles and the bay.
"In his day, it was the only connection between the pueblo and San Francisco . . . then the big city of the coast. Los Angeles was a contemptible, one-horse, sleepy adobe town so inconsequential that the first railroad had to be coaxed hard to build the rails into Los Angeles instead of driving straight down to San Bernardino.
"There was a weekly mail steamer which anchored off shore and took on passengers from the pueblo by lighter."

W.P.A. funds provided a new auditorium, Barnum Hall, which included practice rooms for band and orchestra as well as two music classrooms, 1952, 1930s
The foyer of Barnum Hall displays a handsome tile mosaic, fifteen by seventeen feet in size, called The Vikings. The mosaic, together with a mural on asbestos stage curtain, were the work of a Federal Art Project during the W.P.A. days. The work was directed by an eminent Santa Monica artist, S. Macdonald Wright, who used the Viking theme to emulate the name chose many years before by the student body as the name of its athletic teams, 1952, 1938

Sharon and his associates, including Hayward, had been in control of both Crown Point and Belcher for years, although without holding a majority of the stock of either mine after assessments began to be levied, 1943, 1872, 1871
Crown Point stock rose quietly from $3 a share on November 19 to $16 on December 10. The market price of Belcher, meantimes, had increased to $7.50 a share. Development work proceeded slowly for a time and the reports were not very encouraging, due no doubt to the plans of Hayward and Jones who were aiming to secure control of the Crown Point, 1943, 1871, 1870s, 1920-1850

The offer was accepted and the transaction closed. Lord states on the authority of Sharon that Sharon sold his 4,100 shares of Crown Point to Hayward on June 7, 1871, for $1,400,000, which would be at the rate of $341 a share. This was by far the largest single transaction in Comstock stocks up to that time, 1943, 1871

All of the others on the exchange had advanced with them, but there was no boom until after the first of January 1872. the developments in Crown Point and Belcher by that time were so favorable that all of the other stocks began to increase rapidly in price, 1943, 1872

"One of Lord's best stories is spoiled by a little fact. He says that because of Sharon's charge against Jones [in the campaign for 1872 U.S. Senate . . . hurried on a general fall in mining stocks. He overlook [ed] the fact that on . . . Belcher was increased from 10,400 to 104,000 on August 1, 1872, and fell to $108 a share, which led innocent writers to comment on the extraordinary decline in prices, 1943, 1872

Its greatest year was in 1873, when 154,664 tons yielded $10,525,000, or $69 a ton. The dividends that year totaled $6,760,000.

[p. 130] "The boundary line between the two mines [the Crown Point and the Belcher] passed downward through the middle of the bonanza, dividing it into two nearly equal parts. The Belcher's portion proved richer and more productive so that the trade eventually favored Sharon and his associates, Ralston and Mills [over Hayward and Jones.] In addition to the lion's share of the dividends, each group made private milling profits running into the millions, 1943, 1870s

Life was never monotonous during the period of her visits.
The first time [1906] she went to live in a hotel at Venice by the sea and insisted that she should catch the fish for her own dinner every night.
The press agent of the Orpheum had to hire old sea-dogs to catch fish; put them in a tub under the wharf and see that Madam's fish-hook arrived in the tub.
On her last visit they hired a floor of a Hollywoood hotel for her; but she was adamant; she would go back to Venice-by that time a wreck of the gay resort she had visited.
Coming back to the theater for an evening performance, her car bumped into a truck loaded with iron pipe.

Madame Bernhardt never recovered from the injury to her knee.
When she got to Paris, her leg was amputated-and this was the beginning of the end.
She made one more visit, being carried onto the stage in a wheeled chair and supporting herself by a table as she went through the motions of acting. Her greatest rival, Duse, also made one of the last appearances of her life in Los Angeles. In those days my newspaper work was concerned largely with the world of sports as well as the theater.
